A long-established motorcycle business on the Fylde coast has been granted planning permission to extend its premises.

Raceways Motorcycle Centre, based at 48-60 Dock Street in Fleetwood, will now be able to acquire additional space for motorcycle sales, essentially doubling the sales floor.

The firm will also take on four extra members of staff.

It comes after Wyre’s planning officer approved an application for a single storey side and rear extension at the business premises.

Raceways is a family-owned, family-run business which was established more than 30 years ago.

Well known on the Fylde coast as a Yamaha Premier exclusive dealership, the business stocks an extensive range of new Yamaha bikes including off-road competition machines, as well as a large stock of used bikes for sale.

Under owner Steve Rodgers, the Raceways Motorcycles team also competes at various levels of motorcycle racing, both internationally and nationally, including the British 125cc championship and the British Superbike class.

Steve said: “We sell 1,500 bikes a year and have six vans on the road taking bikes to customers literally all over the country.

“We wanted to expand the premises to give us a better chance to show the range we have in stock.”

The planning officer stated in a report: “The proposal is to create a single-storey extension within the existing car park, accessed from Albert Street.

“The extension will have a flat roof with a height of approx. 3.9m; a similar height to the eaves of the existing showroom.

“The application form confirms that opening hours would remain unchanged as existing; 9am-to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday and 09am to 5pm on Saturdays, with no operation on Sundays or Bank Holidays. The number of full time employees would increase from 16 to 20.”

The report adds: “The proposal complies with planning policy and guidance and should be granted planning permission”
