The Date has been set for the testing of the new system on smart phones in the UK early April 23rd
Millions of people in the UK will hear an "Armageddon Alert" coming from their phone, in a Government planned test of a new public warning system, with the test of the system going ahead on the 23rd of April in the early evening.
The System is being planned for use in emergency's in the event of life threatening events such as flooding or other severe weather,
It will allow Emergency Services and the Government to send out immediate warnings to the public if they are at risk of life-threatening situations, with the alarm not allowing people to use their phone during it without first acknowledging it, ensuring that it is received properly and people are well-informed in the case of flooding or wildfire Etc.
According to the Governments National Resilience Framework, published in December, the system is expected to be fully launched across the UK in the early months of this year (2023) but as of this moment it is still within the testing phase.
The Announcement states that it will only be used in instances where their is an immediate risk to life, however, when it was first tested in reading, in 2021, many people noted being completely shocked by the alarm, Speaking to the BBC, Cabinet Minister Oliver Dowden spoke about how these warnings 'targeted' in the hopes that people wont hear the alert again after the following test on the 23rd of April.
The program has received support from both Political Parties, however, the Government has been criticized for the slow rollout of the system, Labour's Shadow Paymaster General, Fleur Anderson, Said: ""While Britain faces increasing global threats, not least from Putin’s Russia, this saga has dragged on far too long and left our country lagging far behind on keeping the public safe."
No data will be collected by the system the Government has insisted and the alert is free to receive, However, people can choose to opt out of receiving the alert entirely by toggling the "severe and extreme emergency alerts" setting in your phone. But this has been strongly suggested against by the Government and Emergency Services.
