The award has been dubbed 'The MBE for volunteer groups.'

The Fylde-based social action and community organisation have been given the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK.

United Youth Alliance (UYA), founded by Deborah Terras in 2018, work to promote social action initiatives through research, training and events which help to support and develop local communities.

Based on the Fylde Coast and previously known as the Washington Group, it is one of 262 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year.

Their work aims to remind us of all the ways fantastic volunteers are contributing to their local communities and working to make life better for those around them.

Jake Adams, a Director of UYA says: "We are profoundly thankful for this prestigious recognition and remain steadfast to nurturing positive change in our community, collaborating with our partners to continue our mission of empowering our community and driving positive change for years to come, united in our commitment to make a difference."

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service recognises the outstanding work done by local volunteer groups to benefit their communities.

It was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and was continued by King Charles after his Accession.

UYA formally received the accolade on Monday at an awards ceremony at Preston County Hall.

They will receive the official award crystal and certificate from Mrs Amanda Parker JP, Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire later this summer.

In addition, UYA will also attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May and June 2024, along with other recipients of this year’s Award.

Being granted The King's Award for Voluntary Service is a tremendous honour that reflects the unwavering commitment of the UYA team and the transformative impact of their community-led initiatives.

Deb Terras, the organisation's founder, added: "When you look at the communities around Blackpool and how you can help and support these young people, we're just so excited about it."
