New plans could be afoot for a distinctive landmark building in Blackpool which is currently empty.
The Cedar Tavern, in Cedar Square, which has been closed as a bar for several years, has been available to let at a price of £15,000 a year for much of 2025.
But on November 12, a planning application was submitted to Blackpool Council for display of one internally illuminated projecting sign to the Wood Street elevation.
The proposal is for a projecting cylindrical sign, 600mm diameter x 80mm deep, internally lit with white LED.
The application form states: “Signage to be located in previous location of lantern light fittings.”
No further planning details are available at this time but it is understood that the building could finally be brought back into use.
There have been hopes that the white-tiled building’s usage would be revived since it was given a major upgrade four years ago.
In 2021 it was refurbished after being awarded a grant from a Blackpool Council-funded project to improve town centre streets.
It underwent a £125,000 improvement scheme under the council’s £2.3m Property Improvement Fund (PIF) which included the installation of new windows, extensive external facade repairs and restoration of the roof.
The upper floor on the premises included a non-functioning and apparently successful two-bedroom apartment now listed on the accommodation website.
Before its closure the Cedar Tavern was a popular and busy pub in the heart of Blackpool.
