Blackpool and Fleetwood were both on opposite ends of seven and six goal thrillers during last night's EFL Trophy action.

The Seasiders stormed to a 5-2 victory over Liverpool u21s thanks to a Kylian Kouassi second half hat-trick.

The Merseyside youth outfit started strong taking the lead in the first half with Paul Glatzel getting on the scoresheet in the 30th minute, before fellow youngster Albie Morgan equalised on the verge of half time.

It was a tangerine goal riot from there on in after the home side took an early second half lead, with the 20-year-old Kouassi taking his competition goal tally up to four and rendering Mateusz Musialowski's 66th minute equaliser for the visitors useless.

Full back Andy Lyons topped off a great night at Bloomfield Road for his side with a composed finish from the left in stoppage time.

Blackpool remain unbeaten in the competition with two wins in two taking them top of their group.

Fleetwood succumbed 4-3 to penalties at the DW Stadium despite taking a two goal lead over Wigan from a Kabongo Tshimanga brace.

It was a tale of two halves however as the Latics played havoc with the Cod Army's defence and took a 3-2 lead on the 87th minute mark, with a Tom Pearce freekick from out wide.

There was still fight left in the men from the Fylde coast as defender Josh Earl finally gave the travelling fans something in the second half to cheer, taking the cup tie to penalties.

Fleetwood started the strongest with Callum Lang having his spot kicked well saved by the experienced Lynch in goal, but it was the Greater Manchester outfit who prevailed with Ryan Broom firing wide and securing the away side's fate, following misses from Danny Mayor and Xavier Simmons.

Things remain positive in the competition however for Fleetwood as they remain in the top two, trailing Wigan at the top of their group, leaving everything to play for ahead of their last group stage match against Leicester u21s next month.
