The Scheme will eventually encompass the old site of the Bony Street Market

Bonny Street Market, which closed last November will be used as a construction yard for the building of the leisure development scheme.

The popular market closed last autumn after the council terminated its lease, as the site was needed for the £300m Blackpool centre leisure development, contractor Ballast Nedam, who are currently building a new multi-storey car park on the site of the old central car park, confirmed that they will be using for the rest of the year.

The completed multi-storey, which is the enabling phase of the scheme, is due to be handed over to the council for fitting out with it being planned for operation in August, Ballast Nedam's contract also includes an access road to be created to the car park, however, this will require the relocation of its current offices and storage area's to the new site at the old market.

An agreement has been accepted giving licensed use of the site of the old market, which traded for 37 years, until the 8th of December this year.

The Market was originally given an extra season of trade after stall holders successfully argued that the notice they had been given was not sufficient. further site investigations for additional phases of the development are planned for later this year.

The heritage quart and public square, on Central Drive, is the next phase of the scheme, with it having full permission for holiday accommodation, restaurants and bars within the site, permission was also outlined for the construction of three indoor theme parks, a 200-room hotel and bars, as well as further restaurants and outdoor entertainment facilities.

Michael Gove, Levelling Up minister, visited Blackpool last November to announce funding, around £40m, towards demolishing and relocation of the Blackpool Magistrates Court building in a bid to free up space for these further phases of investment, a replacement for the courthouse is expected to be built on the old site of the former Devonshire Road Hospital.

The Site, on Devonshire Road, was until recently occupied by a temporary ambulance station, but with the opening of the new station on Waterloo Road, south shore, the lot is vacant once more.
