Community Event to Watch Spectacular Solar Eclipse from the coastline at Fairhaven Lake


The South Fylde Methodist Circuit is inviting people of all ages to a free Community Solar Eclipse Picnic at Fairhaven Lake, where visitors can safely watch the UK's spectacular near-total solar eclipse using our free viewing glasses with guidance from a local astronomer, enjoy complimentary bubble tea and sweet treats, and share a summer evening by the coast."


People from across the Fylde Coast are invited to experience one of the most remarkable astronomical events of a lifetime as churches from the South Fylde Methodist Circuit host a free Community Solar Eclipse Picnic on Wednesday 12 August 2026.


Between 6.00pm and 8.00pm, a spectacular near-total solar eclipse will be visible across the UK, with the moon covering around 90–95% of the sun shortly after 7.00pm. The sky will briefly darken in what would normally be broad daylight, creating a memorable moment that will not be repeated in Western Europe until 2090.


Everyone is welcome to gather at Fairhaven Lake, near the Spitfire Memorial, from 5.00pm to 8.00pm. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, blanket or folding chair and enjoy a relaxed evening by the coast with family, friends and neighbours.


To help everyone enjoy the eclipse safely, free solar eclipse viewing glasses will be available while stocks last. A local astronomer will also be joining the event to explain what is happening throughout the evening, answer questions and help visitors understand the science behind this remarkable celestial event, making it an enjoyable and educational experience for all ages.


As part of the evening, visitors can also enjoy complimentary bubble tea and sweet treats, all provided free of charge while stocks last.
