The Conservatives have claimed a double win in the Ansdell Park and Kirkham South wards parish by-elections, holding both seats.

The May 7 polls took place in the Park ward of Ansdell and Fairhaven Parish Council and the Kirkham South ward of Kirkham Town Council.

The vacancy on Ansdell and Fairhaven Parish Council came after the resignation of Coun Amy Barnes, while the vacancy in Kirkham South comes after Coun Tony Wellings stood down.

    The candidates

Ansdell and Fairhaven Parish Council, Park ward:

    • Alan Roe (Local Conservatives) 707 (Elected)
    • Denise Royle (Reform UK) 411
    • Carole Elaine Harrison (Independent) 189
    • Rob Jervis (Green Party) 123
    • Viki Miller (Labour) 89

Kirkham Town Council Kirkham South ward:

    • Chris March (Local Conservatives) 241 (Elected)
    • Rob Fergus (Reform 204
    • Ian Richard Nichols Hogg (Green Party) 60
    • Jed Sullivan (Labour) 57

The by-elections coincided with widespread council elections across Britain last night which has so far seen Reform UK making significant gains at the expense of Labour and the Conservatives in early council election results in England.

As those results, including polls across England and Wales, begin to come in they will be seen as a major test for the Labour government led by Sir Keir Starmer.
