Plans have been put forward to open a modest-sized Hindu place of worship in Blackpool.
The proposals for the temple, earmarked for premises at 1 Nelson Road in South Shore, have been submitted to planners at Blackpool Council.
The application is for use of premises as a place of worship (Use Class F1) at the property.
There is currently no fully dedicated, permanent Hindu temple building in Blackpool, although the local community does have regular gatherings and a part-time worship space.
There are few details about the proposal so far, although the applicant is listed as Mr D Mehta and the company name as Maa Durga Bhawan.
Blackpool’s Hindu population remains small, with only around 500 members across the town, according to the UK Census data.
Nevertheless, the Fylde Hindu Society is active in the area, staging events aimed at bringing communities together.
These include the popular and colourful Indian Cultural Festival, which is held annually at the Comedy Carpet opposite Blackpool Tower and features Bollywood dance groups, dhol drumming, henna art, and traditional Garba and Bhangra sessions.
The Society says it is not involved in the planning application, which was submitted to planners on July 14.
The application is pending a decision.
