Proposals for a temporary ice rink at Lytham look set to go ahead as planned after fears there could be a setback.
Last month Fylde Council approved the ice skating scheme for Clifton Square, put forward by Lytham Business Partnership (LBP).
The proposed bespoke real ice rink would be put in place after the Christmas lights switch-on and be open to the public from Saturday, November 22 to Sunday, January 4, 2026.
However, it was feared that highway rules might jeopardise the plans.
There were concerns the legal status of Clifton Square as a public thoroughfare might require a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) to be put in place – and that this could take as long as 12 weeks.
There were even fears this would have to go before the Secretary of State,
But a spokesperson for LCC said: “A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) for the proposed ice rink at Lytham does not require referral to the Secretary of State, nor will a full road closure be necessary, as the area in question is pedestrianised.
“Clifton Square is subject to an existing Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) prohibiting driving except for loading and unloading, meaning it remains a highway in legal terms.
“The TTRO currently being processed will temporarily permit vehicle access to facilitate the installation and removal of the ice rink.
“The need for a TTRO arises from the temporary occupation of the highway, which must be legally authorised – similar to how planning permission is required to change the use of land.”
The Lytham Business Partnership was approached for a comment.
