The famous Blackpool Tower complex is to be given bold new signage and windows repairs, if planning permission is granted.

An application has been lodged with Blackpool planners for renewal of fascia signage and replacement of illuminated canopy signage in line with previous permission on an earlier application.

A separate listed building consent application, denoting the national importance of the building, is applying for reinstatement and repair to windows and removal of disused vents on the Promenade, Bank Hey Street and Victoria Street façades ,has also been submitted to the Council.

A Design and Access Statement for the signage work, said: ”In 2010, Blackpool Council bought the Blackpool Tower complex into their ownership and commenced on a number of restoration and refurbishment projects to bring the building back to its former glory.

“Extensive refurbishment of the elevations took place which sought to restore and replace a number of original and retrospective interventions to the facades.

“New signage over the new main entrance from Bank Hey Street formed part of these works.

“The former light grey aluminium tray signage has been replaced with a black aluminium tray within the same location.

“The overall layout of the new signage which reads “I [HEART] BLACKPOOL”, is broadly similar but more narrow than previous due to less individually cut letters being required.”

The Blackpool Tower and associated buildings were constructed between 1891-1894 and opened to the public on Whit Sunday, May 14 1894. The Tower was designed by Messrs Maxwell and Tuke of Manchester.

    A planning decision is pending.
