Major plans for new extension at top Fylde coast college

Blackpool and the Fylde College is looking to create a brand new single-storey teaching block as it looks to expand its Bispham campus.

The new unit will “support a range of educational, training, and operational uses” once up-and-running, subject to planning permission.

A planning application has been submitted to Blackpool Council, seeking consent for the erection of a single storey side extension to existing teaching buildings at the college’s Ashfield Road site.

An Access and Design Statement by chartered building consultants Leeming Associates, said: “The proposal seeks full planning permission for the erection of a new single storey building adjacent to the existing neighbouring structure, Wyre 2.

“The new structure is considered detached in its construction, and will sit right up against the existing Wyre 2 Building gable end to give a seamless effect.

“The proposed building has been designed to replicate the adjacent buildings (Wyre 1 and 2) in terms of footprint, scale, height, form, and external appearance in order to maintain visual continuity across the site.

“The building will adopt a simple rectangular form with a pitched roof and industrial-style detailing consistent with the neighbouring structures

“Internally, the building will provide modern flexible accommodation capable of supporting a range of educational, training, and operational uses associated with the College.”

The proposal forms part of the College’s wider investment into improving and expanding its facilities to support future growth and operational efficiency.

The simple industrial design approach is considered appropriate within the established campus setting and ensures that the proposed building integrates successfully into its surroundings without appearing visually intrusive or out of character.

The statement concludes: “The proposed development represents a carefully considered and appropriate addition to the Blackpool & The Fylde College campus.

“The building has been specifically designed to replicate the adjacent structure in terms of scale, appearance, materials, and architectural form.

“The proposal will provide additional modern accommodation capable of supporting the College’s operational and educational requirements while contributing towards continued investment in skills development and educational infrastructure within the borough.”

Although the college is set to gain a huge new £65m Multiversity campus in the Talbot Gateway area of Blackpool in September 2028, it is keen to continue to develop its Bispham campus, which was first opened in 1970.

Prior to this, the institution operated primarily out of the Palatine Road site, which opened as the Blackpool Technical College and School of Art in 1937.
