Proposals to develop five padel tennis courts at the Village Hotel in Blackpool have been given the go ahead.
The sport is said to be one of the fastest growing in the world and there have been a string of new courts granted planning consent on the Fylde coast over the past 12 months.
Padel is a racket sport that draws influence from tennis and squash. It is played in doubles on an enclosed court where players can use the walls to return shots, similar to squash.
The game involves rackets and balls similar to those used in tennis.
A planning application was lodged with Blackpool Council seeking erection of an enclosure and use as five padel courts at the Village Hotel on East Park Drive.
A Planning Statement on behalf of applicants, VUR Village Trading No 1 Limited Village, said: “The development proposals comprise the installation of 5 padel tennis courts with a canopy shelter structure and replacement surrounding fencing on the existing unused tennis courts.
“Padel has gained significant popularity in the UK in recent years. From 2019-2023, the number of padel courts increased by 600%, reaching 350 in 2023 .
“The sport has gained attention from celebrities and influencers which further boosts its appeal. Additionally, padel does not require high physical fitness, making it suitable for all age groups.
“Beyond its athletic aspects, it is a highly sociable and entertaining activity.
“Village Hotel would like to extend this exciting recreation offer to Blackpool. The proposed padel courts will be accessible to hotel guests and members of the public via paid memberships.
“The existing courts are unused and in a poor state of repair therefore proposals will retain the sports/leisure use while improving the condition and visual impact of the land. The existing access point to the outdoor sports area is retained from the hotel car park.”
The statement says that each proposed pitch measures 20 metres long by 10 metres wide and a secure boundary fence is proposed around the full court area.
