Cleveleys is to get a big new illuminated ‘welcome’ sign to greet people coming into the town centre.
The freestanding ‘Welcome to Cleveleys’ sign and supporting structure has a maximum width of 10m and height of 8m and will be located on the public highway leading from Victoria Square into main town centre.
A planning application for the sign was submitted to Wyre Council by applicant Jane Littlewood, chairman of a community group called Care For Cleveleys.
She applied for advertisement consent for an illuminated welcome sign for Cleveleys town centre, at the entrance to Victoria Road West.
The scheme was approved via delegated powers by the planning officer, and was backed by 44 letters of support.
The sign includes orange and pale blue lettering, along with images of a seagull and a seashell.
The planning officer said in a report: “ The Local Plan (planning policy) requires signs to not cause a public safety hazard, obscure visibility or distract the attention of users of the highway or hinder pedestrian movement.
“The sign is located above a busy adopted highway close to a major traffic junction with traffic lights.
“The supporting legs are to be positioned in the public footpath in proximity to other street furniture and a pedestrian crossing. The proposal would not have a detrimental impact on highway safety.”
