Blackpool Zoo welcome new African Lion Cubs

First time mother of 3 show's off her new family

A statement issued by the zoo said.....

"We're delighted to share that Hira and Khari have welcomed three African lion cubs, becoming first-time parents. These are the first lion cubs to be born at Blackpool Zoo since Khari himself was born over 10 years ago!

"Being an inexperienced mother, Hira chose to give birth in the outdoor paddock, so a temporary, partial closure of the viewing area at the Big Cat Habitat is in place to give her and the cubs their privacy during this crucial early period.

"As the cubs were only born on Sunday, 26th July, it is still very early days for Hira and her cubs as the youngsters remain vulnerable at this stage, so our priority is giving them the time and space they need to settle in and bond as a family.

"The arrival of the cubs represents an important contribution to the future of African lions, which are currently classified as vulnerable in the wild, having declined significantly over recent decades due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and the reduction of natural prey.

"We know visitors will be excited about meeting the cubs, but their welfare has to come first. The partial closure is being reviewed on a daily basis, but even when the viewing area is opened, visitors are not guaranteed to see the cubs as Hira is keeping them safely tucked away.

"We’ll share more updates as soon as possible, and we’re looking forward to properly introducing them to everyone "
